During my time at International Rescue Committee, I chose to do my internship in the immigration section. I got interested in doing my internship here due to the global learning medallion event I attended. At first, I was not sure what to expect or how I was going to contribute my time there.
Once I met with my supervisor, he sat me down and started to explain what was expected from me. Everything from this internship is confidential and so taking pictures or videos would be inappropriate. My time there consisted of making and updating files for new and current clients in the electronic system and hard copies for the filing cabinets based on how we received them. I also attended an immigration related presentation, where my supervisor went to explain the process on how to apply for citizenship in the United States.
All in all, my time at International Rescue Committee as an immigration intern was an enriching experience. Meeting different clients and getting to know their stories, to how my supervisors took the time to be patient and treated them with kindness and respect is something that is hard to find when it comes to the topic of immigration.
I understand that we all come from different cultures and have different beliefs, however at the end of the day we should try to remember that we're all human beings, we all matter, and we are all important.
